The autumn fog held the town trapped, and in the lowly quarters of Spitalsfield and Whitechapel the prostitutes hung around in the streets, cursing the cold weather.
A door opened and the narrow shaft of light revealed a couple in tight embrace. Searing promises of love were blown out into the freezing night.
“Will you come again tomorrow?”
“If I can.”
“I love you!”
“Go back into the house. You mustn’t be seen, my angel.”
They clung to each other again. Then he pushed her gently back into the hallway of the house and left in search of a cab.
Two streets away, he found one.
“Belgrave Square” called out the young man to the coachman and swung himself into the inside of the cab. He threw down his top hat on the seat next to him and rummaged around in the pocket of his coat for his wallet to pay the coachman. There wasn’t much left. Fortune had not smiled on him in the last few days, neither at his card games nor during roulette. He shrugged.
Together with the coins, an artistic miniature rolled into the dim light of the oil lamp illuminating the inside of the cab. He studied the pale, heart-shaped face of the girl for some time, her thick brown plaits and large green eyes looking up into his so seriously. Playfully, he held the picture up to his lips before letting it slide back into the depths of his coat pocket.
“Sarah,” he murmured. “I love you so. Why on earth can’t I be true to you?”
Sarah Cavendish rested her head in her hands and was dreaming of Steven Carmichael. When she met him for the first time at a society gathering, she was sure she had never met such a superficial person before. The unmarried ladies sighed when they heard his name, but everyone knew that he often gambled – and even more often lost. And she was the richest heiress in town. Nobody had ever doubted that she would one day marry into the aristocracy. But one day Steven had captured her heart. A few months later, she was his bride.
“Miss Sarah, Mr. Carmichael is here. I’ve shown him to the blue parlour.”
“Very good. Thank you, Emily.” Sarah did not betray how the unexpected appearance of her maid had startled her. “Please tell him that I will be down presently.”
She gathered up the folds of her pigeon-blue afternoon dress and hurried down the stairs.
He was standing at the window, leafing through a book.
“Hello Steven.”
His eyes lit up at the sight of her. “Hello, dearest one. You look adorable.”
She returned his smile, yet wishing he wouldn’t use these childish pet names, and offered him her cheek.
He brushed it with his lips and pretended to push her away in a gesture of comical abandon.
